STORY: The U.S. has confirmed the first human case in the United States of travel-associated New World screwworm. It involved a patient who returned from travel to El Salvador, according to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services spokesman Andrew G.

"The risk to public health in the United States from this introduction is very low," said HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon.

U.S. officials confirmed a case of the flesh-eating parasite in a person who traveled from El Salvador. Screwworm typically affects cattle in South America but has spread north in recent years.
