A blood supply shortage in the US has reached a "crisis" level, according to the American Red Cross, which says it is the second time in its 150-year history that levels have been this low.

The American Red Cross has declared a national blood supply crisis for only the second time in its history, warning a drop in donations is threatening the availability of blood nationwide.

The announcement said the national blood supply had dropped to about two days’ worth, the lowest since January 2022.

More blood donors are needed during the hot weather as some supplies drop to dangerously low levels.
