New Jersey officials are now investigating whether a resident’s malaria infection was locally acquired. The New Jersey Departments of Health (NJDOH) and Environmental Protection reported on the case Monday.

A New Jersey resident with no history of international travel has been infected with malaria, state health officials said.

A Morris County resident contracted the illness without leaving the United States. Investigators are searching to determine the source of the infection.
