A federal court dealt a major blow on Tuesday to Republicans’ hopes of picking up five new GOP seats in Congress next year in Texas, ruling that the party’s redraw was unconstitutional. But the decision was far from the last word on the case.
A federal court in El Paso ruled that the redistricting backed by Trump and Republicans to reshape the map for the 2026 midterms illegally weakened the voting power of minorities.
One judge wrote in the ruling that politics played a role in drawing the new map, which was passed by the Republican-controlled legislature. The judge also found that substantial evidence shows Texas racially gerrymandered the map.
