Democratic socialist New York City councilman files paperwork to run against Hakeem Jeffries
A democratic socialist New York City councilman has filed paperwork to run against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in the 2026 midterm election.
On the same day Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor, New York City voters approved ballot measures speeding up new home construction.
The New York City mayoral race exploded on social media, which worked in favor of Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani.
Zohran Mamdani's mayoral campaign turned out lots of voters who didn't back Kamala Harris last year — they are ethnically diverse, younger and less affluent.
While there aren’t as many competitive New York City Council races as there were two years ago, this year’s cycle has had no shortage of interesting threads to follow: from doctored fake news stories to the strong pipeline of former staffers becoming council members to candidates preparing for their next run to a fight over electioneering and the looming battle to become the next speaker.
A close result would benefit voters by telling the new mayor to move to the political center.
Odd-year elections don't get much attention, but there is no shortage of big decisions voters will be making on Nov. 4

Michael Cashman set to be sworn into New York State Assembly after winning the Special Election
Former Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael Cashman is set to be sworn into the New York State Assembly on Thursday morning. Cashman won the Special Election for New York’s 115th Assembly District seat earlier this month.
Fresh off the victory, 57% of city residents surveyed by Siena say Mamdani will be good for New York. Just 26% say he’ll be bad. About 40% said they viewed him favorably; 40% unfavorably. But that’s better than before the election, when he was running 30-38, according to Siena.
