Orlando mayor addresses public safety, housing, future projects at State of the City address
Community leaders in Orlando are celebrating the city’s growth. Mayor Buddy Dyer delivered the State of the City Address Tuesday morning. He reflected on the city’s 150th birthday.
Dyer pledged to remove barriers and modernize land use zoning to help private developers under his initiative called Orlando Unlocked. The program is helping to build more townhouses and apartments — like in the up-and-coming Packing District that recently opened a YMCA, a food hall and 800 housing units on the city’s west side, Dyer said.
Orlando currently faces a housing shortage and in another decade, the need for more apartments and houses will be critical as 90,000 new residents are expected to call the City Beautiful home by 2035.
