Early identification matters. Autism identification can matter. And differential diagnosis matters. Childhood apraxia of speech can coexist with autism but apraxia is not autism, and communication differences, sensory differences, limited speech, frustration, difficulty imitating, and other developmental concerns can create a complicated clinical picture in very young children. I lived this with my own child. I also see children clinically whose speech motor abilities deserve a much closer look
