When using PanPastels for the base layer for fur, I prefer to get this layer blended so that there are no harsh edges between colour changes. This makes it much easier to add details on top. However, it's really important not to add to much PanPastel at this stage because filling the tooth of the paper will mean we can't add details on top with the pencils. For this Red Fox drawing, I used PanPastels for the base layer. This allows me to map in my main shapes, the highlights and shadows and I can then refine everything from there with my pastel pencils. I like to build up a few layers before I jump into details to increase the depth of every section of the drawing. I decided to use PanPastels for Mabels portrait due to her beautiful fur colour. The colour saturation of PanPastels is stunning. For any fur colours like this they work so well at putting in that initial vibrancy. PanPastels and their beautiful, soft pigment mean they blend beautifully but they can more easily fill the tooth of the paper if to much is applied.
