CLOTHESPIN (PEG) CHALLENGES! We love these for fine motor skill development. Squeeze a peg. Use a pincer or tripod grasp. Encourage the pads of fingers touch the peg (rather than the sides of fingers). Encourage strong finger joints (try not to collapse them into hyper-extension). Build strong palmar arches and an open webspace. Strengthen dynamic finger movements with the use of intrinsic muscles. Practice in-hand manipulation. 1. Colour match 2. Mrs. Macie shows us a few Occupational Therapy techniques to strengthen pincer and tripod grasp. You can even incorporate some visual motor activities and direction-following by asking your kiddo to pull certain colors. By practicing these types of activities, we're working hard to get these skills to stick! #PediatricOccupationalTherapy #FineMotorSkills #DevelopmentalActivities #ActivitiesOfDailyLife #BatonRouge

CROCODILE CROCODILE PINCH AND FLIP We are working on moving from a brush grasp where the pencil is held over the end … to a tripod grasp. This young friend also uses a CLAW grip on the pencil, however it is also important to teach the child how to position their fingers independently. We start by separating the two sides of the hand with the thumb, index and theirs fingers forming a crocodile snapping. The fourth and fifth fingers are curled into the palm of the hand. ✏️✨ Broken crayons = BIG handwriting wins! Short crayons naturally encourage a tripod grasp by taking away the option to use a full-hand grip 🙌 Less squeezing, better finger control, and stronger fine motor skills—all through play! 🖍️ Try this: • Color small pictures • Trace shapes or letters • Do quick “color & switch” games to build endurance Sneaky OT magic that kids don’t even realize is helping their handwriting 💛 📌 Save this tip for later 👇 Follow for more easy, play-based OT ideas #T

FINE MOTOR FUNDAMENTALS: PINCER GRASP A pincer grasp is the pinch that forms between the pad of the index finger and thumb. It develops from 9-12 months of age and becomes more refined over time to a neat pincer (tips of those fingers). We use a pincer grasp in many every day tasks from picking up clothes pegs, tissue paper, elastic bands, opening packaging, managing levers and more! Some children struggle to develop a pincer grasp and they use the sides of their fingers (lateral grasp), ignore
