A deadly heat wave is tightening its grip on Europe, sending temperatures soaring toward record levels and forcing authorities across the continent to close schools, cancel public events and even restrict alcohol consumption.

Late on July 11, Typhoon Bavi made landfall in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, bringing powerful winds, torrential rain and flooding across the region. Nearly two million people were evacuated before the storm, while roads were submerged, trees toppled and transport services were disrupted in parts of Zhejiang, Shanghai and Fujian.
