Last week, the Jamaica Observer — Jamaica’s largest newspaper — published a piece claiming media “cried wolf” about Hurricane Melissa. Melissa hit as a 185 mph Category 5 hurricane — the strongest hurricane landfall on record in the Atlantic. At the time of their publication, 9 bodies had yet to be recovered. 32 deaths occurred in Jamaica. The Observer’s piece was an example of incomplete, lazy and insensitive journalism.
